Today’s ride is train-based at the start and finish. We will catch the 0935 train from Craigieburn to Jacana where we will start our ride along the M80 Ring Road path to Brimbank Park (where we may find a coffee van) and then onto the Maribyrnong Trail which we follow downstream, passing under the Ted Whitten road bridge and the Maribynong River train viaduct along the way. At the Kensington Stock bridge we will cross to the Kensington side where we will follow the final steps of the hundreds of thousands of animals who were walked from the Kensington Saleyards, across the stock bridge to the Footscray abattoir. Our final destination though will be the Flemington station where we will catch the “silver limo” back to Craigieburn (after lunch of course!).
While the route as described is 33km long, don’t let this discourage you from coming – the riding is mostly downhill (see ride profile here) and we will have an optional stop for a coffee (if the coffee van is there) and a spell at about the half-way point or else we can continue and finish at Flemington for lunch (or do both).
Don’t forget to bring your Myki for the train trips, your reusable coffee cup for any coffee we may come across along the way and your bike lock for the restaurant at lunch.
There is a lot of gravel along the Maribyrnong trail, so this route is best suited for MTB or Hybrid.
