To all MBUG members, it’s time to put May 2nd, 3rd and 4th in your calendars for the annual away riding adventure. This year it’s the same Saturday, Sunday out and back format, riding the Great Southern Rail Trail. However, for those keen for more I plan to ride on the Monday to Yarram as this section is recently opened and this would complete the entire Great Southern Rail Trail. A car shuffle may be required.
Based in the small town of Toora and staying at the Toora Tourist Park right near the Rail Trail. This is Cabin style self-contained accommodation with the such facilities in the park as a fully equipped camper’s kitchen, a large function room available for group bookings, and a heated indoor pool.
I have booked a standard cabin for myself and there are 4 other standard ones, all next to each other. So when booking, mention my name to secure these cabins. Other ones are available, including luxury cabins. Price is about $160/night. New pricing structure after Easter. Book anytime to secure and be emailed re pricing and payment. There is also a nearby motel if required. Riders are responsible for their own bookings as usual.
Meals : Be mostly self-sufficient. In the evening the local hotel, The Royal Standard, is open for counter meals. Or a group BBQ at the Tourist Park say one evening.

Itinerary:
Friday 2nd May: Drive to Toora, check-in relax, have a look about, and lubricate your wheel bearings.
Saturday 3rd May: Ride to Fish Creek and return. Lunch at the Long John Pickles Café, Fish Creek. (45kms return).
Sunday 4th May: Ride to Port Welshpool and return. Possibly a fish and chip lunch at the General Store. Checking out the fishing port and the Port Welshpool Long Jetty. (33kms return).
Monday 5th May: For those who wish to stay another night. Ride to Yarram on the newly opened section, 37km one way, with a possible detour to the oldest town in Victoria… Port Albert on the Tarra Trail. This would make 51kms in total. A look about the old cemetery to realise the amount of infants that died during early settlement some may find interesting. A car shuffle may be required as it would be a fair day riding if returning by bike. (91.5kms if returning).
